How Discord timestamps work
A Discord timestamp is a small code in your message: <t:UNIX:STYLE>. The first part is a Unix timestamp, the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 in UTC. The second part is one letter that picks how it is displayed. Discord swaps the code for a formatted date when the message is shown.
Because the Unix timestamp is the same moment everywhere, each reader's Discord app turns it into their own local time, in their own language and date order. Someone in New York and someone in Berlin both see the right time for them, with no “EST or CET?” questions in your event channel.
Use :R (relative) for countdowns, such as “starts in 2 hours”, and :F or :f when people need the exact date. A common pattern for events is both together: the full date followed by the relative time in brackets. Bots can use the same codes in their replies and embeds; the previews on this page use your browser's language, which is close to what Discord shows.
Questions
How do I post a time that works for every time zone?
Pick the date and time here, copy one of the codes, and paste it into your message. Discord replaces the code with the time in each reader’s own time zone and language, so nobody has to convert anything.
Where do Discord timestamps work?
Anywhere Discord renders message text: normal messages, embed descriptions and field values, forum posts and bot replies. They do not render in embed footers or author names, nicknames or channel names.
Does the relative style update by itself?
Yes. A relative timestamp like “in 3 hours” counts down for readers while they look at the message, and flips to “3 hours ago” once the time has passed. You never need to edit the message.
What happens if I leave the style letter off?
A code without a style, like <t:1798761600>, shows as the short date and time, the same as the :f style.
