Discord AI chat bots
An AI chat bot connects a language model to your server, so members can ask questions, get help or just talk to it in a channel you choose.

How a AI chat bot works
Every reply costs money. The bot sends the conversation to a model provider, which charges per token for the text going in as well as the text coming out. Long histories cost more on every message, because the whole thread is sent again each time. That is why good AI bots keep only the last few messages as context and set a per-member limit, for example 20 messages an hour, with a short note when someone hits it.
Keeping the bot in one channel, or having it reply only when mentioned, controls both cost and noise. It also decides which intent you need. Replying to every message in #ask-ai means reading message text, so the Message Content intent is required. Replying to mentions or to an /ask command works without it, since Discord includes the text of messages that mention the bot.
Treat the output as something your server posts. Give the bot clear instructions about what it is for and what it should refuse, run its replies through a moderation check, and keep a log channel staff can read. Replies longer than Discord's 2,000-character message limit have to be split. Discord Bot Creator builds and hosts the bot from your description.
What it usually does
- Replies to messages in one channel, or when mentioned
- Follows a written brief: its name, tone and the topics it refuses
- Keeps a short memory of recent messages for context
- Limits how many messages each member can send per hour
- Checks replies before posting and logs them for staff
- Splits long answers to fit Discord's 2,000-character limit
Permissions and intents it needs
Give a bot only what it uses. These are the permissions a typical AI chat bot asks for in its invite link, and why.
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| View Channels | Sees the channel it answers in. |
| Send Messages | Posts its replies. |
| Send Messages in Threads | Answers inside threads, if you let conversations move there. |
| Read Message History | Replies to the right message and reads recent ones for context. |
| Embed Links | Formats longer answers and the staff log as embeds. |
Privileged intents
Message Content Intent
Needed if the bot answers ordinary messages in a channel. Not needed for an /ask command or for messages that mention the bot.
Enable it in Developer Portal → your app → Bot → Privileged Gateway Intents only if the bot reads a whole channel. Discord asks bots in 100 or more servers to explain why they need it.
AI chat bots built here
Real bots made by describing them, running in Discord servers now.
No AI chat bots are listed yet. Bots appear here once they have been online for three days and joined a server. Yours could be the first.
Describe yours like this
Name the channels, roles and commands you want. The more specific the description, the less you need to change afterwards.
Build an AI helper for our Minecraft server called Steve. It answers questions in #ask-steve only, about our server rules and modpack, and politely refuses anything unrelated. Limit each member to 15 questions an hour, remember the last 6 messages, and log every answer to #ai-log.
Questions about AI chat bots
How do I keep an AI Discord bot's costs under control?
Limit three things: where it answers, how often each member can ask and how much history it sends. One dedicated channel plus a per-member hourly limit keeps volume predictable. Sending only the last few messages as context cuts the cost of every reply. A smaller, cheaper model is also fine for most server questions.
Does an AI Discord bot need the Message Content intent?
Only if it reads ordinary chat. A bot that answers every message in a channel has to read the text, so it needs the intent. If members talk to it with an /ask command or by mentioning it, Discord delivers the text anyway and you can leave the intent off. Fewer intents also means less to justify if the bot grows.
Can an AI bot say something inappropriate in my server?
Yes, language models can produce things you would never post yourself. Reduce the risk with clear instructions about topics to refuse, a moderation check on each reply before it is sent, and a log channel so staff can see what it said. Discord holds the bot's owner responsible for what the bot posts.
Can an AI chat bot answer questions about my server?
Yes, if you give it the facts. Put your rules, FAQ, event times or game details in its instructions and it answers from them. It knows nothing about your server on its own and will guess when asked something outside what you gave it, so tell it to say when it does not know.
