Discord utility bots

A utility bot turns the small jobs a server repeats every week into a few slash commands, so nobody has to do them by hand.

How a utility bot works

Utility bots are a grab bag, and the useful ones solve problems your server actually has. Event servers need timestamps: Discord renders a code like <t:1767225600:F> as a date in each reader's own time zone, and a /time command that builds those codes ends the "is that 8pm your time or mine" thread for good.

Reminders need to survive a restart. A bot that only holds reminders in memory forgets them on its next update, so a reliable one saves each reminder with its due time and checks the list on startup. Polls are the other staple. Discord has built-in polls now, so a poll bot earns its place with anonymous votes, votes limited to certain roles, or results posted to a staff channel.

Server info, user info and role menus round it out. A /serverinfo command shows the creation date, boost level and member count, and a role menu lets members pick their own pings and colors from a dropdown. Most utility commands need no privileged intents at all. You describe the commands you want and the bot is built and hosted for you.

What it usually does

  • Runs polls with buttons, including anonymous ones
  • Sets reminders for a member or a channel that survive restarts
  • Turns a date and time into a timestamp shown in each reader's time zone
  • Shows server info, user info and avatars on request
  • Posts role menus where members pick their own roles
  • Sends scheduled messages, like a weekly event reminder

Permissions and intents it needs

Give a bot only what it uses. These are the permissions a typical utility bot asks for in its invite link, and why.

PermissionWhy
View ChannelsSees the channels where commands are used and scheduled posts go.
Send MessagesPosts polls, reminders and scheduled messages.
Embed LinksShows poll results and server info as embeds.
Manage RolesOnly for role menus. Every role in a menu must sit below the bot's own.

Privileged intents

None needed for a typical utility bot.

None needed for slash-command utilities. Add Server Members Intent only if a command lists members by role or join date across the whole server.

Utility bots built here

Real bots made by describing them, running in Discord servers now.

No utility bots are listed yet. Bots appear here once they have been online for three days and joined a server. Yours could be the first.

Describe yours like this

Name the channels, roles and commands you want. The more specific the description, the less you need to change afterwards.

I need a utility bot for our study server. Add /poll with up to 5 options and anonymous votes, /remind so people can set reminders like "in 2 hours", and /time that turns "Friday 8pm EST" into a Discord timestamp. Every Sunday at 6pm, post the weekly schedule in #announcements.

Questions about utility bots

How do I make a Discord timestamp that shows in everyone's time zone?

Discord turns codes like <t:1767225600:F> into a date shown in each reader's local time. The number is a Unix timestamp, and the letter at the end picks the format: F for full date and time, R for relative time like "in 3 hours". A utility bot can build the code from plain text such as "Friday 8pm EST".

Can a bot set reminders on Discord?

Yes. A /remind command saves who asked, what to say, where to say it and when. A background check then posts the reminder in the channel or by DM when the time comes. Saving reminders to storage, not just memory, is what lets them survive the bot restarting for an update.

Why use a poll bot when Discord has built-in polls?

Built-in polls cover simple votes well. A bot adds anonymous voting, results sent to a staff channel, votes limited to certain roles and polls that close on your own schedule. If none of those matter for your server, Discord's own poll is the simpler choice and needs no setup.

What is a role menu on Discord?

A message with buttons or a dropdown that members use to give themselves roles, such as game pings, pronouns or name colors. It does the same job as reaction roles with a clearer layout, especially on mobile. The bot needs Manage Roles, and every role in the menu must sit below the bot's own role.

Describe the utility bot your server needs

Write it in a sentence or two. You see the plan before anything is built, and your first bot runs free for 7 days.
