Discord economy bots

An economy bot gives your server its own currency, so members can earn it, trade it and spend it on things you decide are worth something.

How a economy bot works

The first decision is where balances live. Most economy bots keep currency per server, so coins earned in your community stay there and another server's inflation cannot leak in. The bot stores each member's balance for each server, and commands like /balance, /pay and /leaderboard read from that store.

Earning is usually a mix of a /daily reward on a 24-hour cooldown, often with a streak bonus, and a /work command on a shorter one. Spending is where an economy holds up or falls apart. A shop that sells roles works well: a custom color, access to a lounge channel or a title that shows in the member list. The bot needs Manage Roles for that, with its role above everything it sells. Without things to buy, coins pile up and stop meaning anything.

Games like coinflip and slots are popular, but keep the currency free of real-world value. Selling coins for real money, or paying out cash prizes, turns a game into actual gambling and runs into the law and Discord's policies. You describe the currency, the earn rates and the shop, and the bot is built and hosted for you on Discord Bot Creator.

What it usually does

  • Keeps a balance for each member in each server
  • Pays out /daily rewards with a streak bonus
  • Lets members /pay each other and check a /leaderboard
  • Runs a shop where members buy roles with coins
  • Hosts games like coinflip and slots with odds you set
  • Gives staff commands to add or remove coins

Permissions and intents it needs

Give a bot only what it uses. These are the permissions a typical economy bot asks for in its invite link, and why.

PermissionWhy
View ChannelsSees the channels where members use economy commands.
Send MessagesPosts balances, game results and shop receipts.
Embed LinksShows the shop and leaderboard as embeds.
Manage RolesGives members the roles they buy. Every shop role must sit below the bot's own.

Privileged intents

None needed for a typical economy bot.

None needed when members earn and spend through slash commands. Coins per message work without Message Content too, since the bot only counts messages and never reads them.

Economy bots built here

Real bots made by describing them, running in Discord servers now.

No economy bots are listed yet. Bots appear here once they have been online for three days and joined a server. Yours could be the first.

Describe yours like this

Name the channels, roles and commands you want. The more specific the description, the less you need to change afterwards.

Make an economy bot with a currency called shells. Give 100 shells from /daily with a 10% streak bonus, 20 to 50 from /work once an hour, and let people /pay each other. Add a /shop where the @Reef Lounge role costs 5,000 shells and a custom color role costs 2,000.

Questions about economy bots

Do economy bot balances carry over between servers?

Usually not, and per-server balances are the safer choice. Each server gets its own economy, so you control the earn rates and nobody arrives with a fortune earned somewhere else. A shared balance makes sense only if you run several servers for the same community and want one wallet across them.

How do I sell roles in a Discord economy bot?

Add each role to the shop with a price. When a member buys it, the bot subtracts the coins and assigns the role, so it needs Manage Roles and its own role must sit above every role it sells. Roles that open a channel make good items, because they give coins a use that members can see.

Is gambling in an economy bot allowed on Discord?

Games played with a currency that has no real-world value, like coinflip or slots with server coins, are common. The line is real money: selling coins, buying chances with cash or paying out real prizes. That can count as gambling under the law in many countries and goes against Discord's policies, so keep your currency for fun only.

How do I stop inflation in a Discord economy?

Give coins somewhere to go. Recurring costs like role rentals, shop items that get used up and a small fee on /pay all take currency out. Keep /daily modest next to shop prices, and check the leaderboard after a few weeks. If the top balances are far beyond anything for sale, raise prices or add new items.
