Discord fun bots

A fun bot gives members something to do together between conversations: a quick game, a trivia round or a meme on request.

How a fun bot works

Buttons changed Discord mini-games. Tic-tac-toe, connect four and rock paper scissors now run inside a single message whose buttons update after each move, so two people can play without typing commands back and forth. These games use slash commands and button clicks, which means the bot needs no privileged intents for them.

Trivia is the most requested fun feature. Free question banks like the Open Trivia Database cover about two dozen categories, though questions you write about your own game, show or community land better. Trivia where players click an answer button works without extra setup. A race where the first person to type the right answer wins needs the Message Content intent, because the bot has to read chat.

Memes are trickier than they look. Reddit tightened access to its API in 2023, so a bot that pulls from subreddits can stop working without notice. A set of images your members submit, or a meme channel in your own server the bot picks from, holds up better. Keep scores in a leaderboard so games carry over between evenings. You describe the games and Discord Bot Creator builds and hosts the bot.

What it usually does

  • Runs button games like tic-tac-toe, connect four and rock paper scissors
  • Hosts trivia rounds with a running score
  • Posts memes or images from a set you choose
  • Answers /8ball, coin flips and dice rolls
  • Keeps a game leaderboard for the server
  • Runs a counting or word-chain channel

Permissions and intents it needs

Give a bot only what it uses. These are the permissions a typical fun bot asks for in its invite link, and why.

PermissionWhy
View ChannelsSees the channels where games run.
Send MessagesPosts questions, game boards and results.
Embed LinksShows game boards and the leaderboard as embeds.
Attach FilesUploads meme images from your own set.
Add ReactionsMarks correct answers and counting numbers with a reaction.

Privileged intents

  • Message Content Intent

Only for games played by typing in chat, like a trivia race, counting or word chain. Button games and slash commands work without it.

If your games need it, enable Message Content Intent in Developer Portal → your app → Bot → Privileged Gateway Intents. Bots in 100 or more servers have to justify it to Discord during verification.

Fun bots built here

Real bots made by describing them, running in Discord servers now.

No fun bots are listed yet. Bots appear here once they have been online for three days and joined a server. Yours could be the first.

Describe yours like this

Name the channels, roles and commands you want. The more specific the description, the less you need to change afterwards.

Make a fun bot for our anime server. Add /trivia with 10 anime questions per round and a points leaderboard, /ttt to challenge someone to tic-tac-toe with buttons, and a #counting channel where the bot reacts to correct numbers and resets the count on a mistake. Also /meme, which posts a random image from the ones we add with /addmeme.

Questions about fun bots

What are good fun commands for a Discord server?

The ones members keep coming back to are short and social: trivia rounds, two-player button games like tic-tac-toe, a counting channel, /8ball and dice rolls, and a meme command. A leaderboard ties them together. Pick a few that fit your community instead of fifty commands nobody remembers.

Can a Discord bot run trivia?

Yes. The bot posts a question with answer buttons or waits for typed answers, then scores whoever gets it right. Questions can come from a free bank like the Open Trivia Database or from a list you write about your own topic. Typed-answer trivia needs the Message Content intent; button trivia does not.

Why did my Discord meme command stop working?

Most meme commands fetch posts from Reddit, and Reddit tightened its API rules in 2023. Bots without registered credentials, or that make too many requests, get blocked. A list of images your server collects, or reposting from a meme channel in your own server, removes that dependency.

Do Discord mini-games work on mobile?

Button games do. Buttons and dropdowns work in the Discord mobile app the same way as on desktop, so tic-tac-toe or trivia with answer buttons plays fine on a phone. Games that rely on reactions or fast typing are harder on mobile, which is one more reason most new games use buttons.
